House Moving in the Eastern Province: A Family Guide from the First Decision to the Last Box

When a family moves from one house to another, furniture is only part of the story. There are children and school schedules, papers and contracts, electricity, water and internet to be moved or opened, neighbours to say goodbye to and new ones to meet, and an old house that must be handed back clean and without disputes. In the Eastern Province homes range from traditional houses in older districts to modern villas and multi-storey houses with a yard, each with its own rhythm. This page is a guide for a family moving a whole house: how to decide what goes and what stays, when to choose the moving date, how to give each family member a role, what to prepare for the first night and first week, and what is needed to hand over the old house and open utilities in the new one.

A family decision

Why moving a house needs a family plan, not just a truck

The truck and crew are the visible part of a move, but what comes before them matters more: the family decides what to take and what to get rid of, when to move, who stays with the children, who supervises each room and when the keys change hands. A family that answers these questions before the date avoids most of the problems people complain about when they move without a plan.

Here we are talking about a whole house with its furniture, appliances and personal belongings, not a handful of items. The decisions multiply: what is wrapped and dismantled, what the family carries itself, what is left for the landlord, and how rooms are set up in the new house so you can use them on the first night without chaos.

House types and what changes with each

The big steps are the same; access and furniture details differ.

Steps

Six steps every successful move goes through

A simple order that makes the final week calmer.

1

Decide the move and the date

Fix the handover date of the old house and the key date of the new one, with the days between, and leave a margin for delays.

2

Sort and lighten

Divide items into move, sell, donate and discard. Every piece you let go saves you wrapping and transport.

3

Book and get a written quote

Contact the moving company early, send photos and details and get a [[written quote|/en/quote/]].

4

Pack and wrap

Start with items you do not use daily, label cartons by room and content and prepare a first-day bag.

5

Moving day

Leave directing to a supervisor, watch the valuable pieces and keep walkways clear.

6

Settle in and hand back the old house

Arrange the main rooms first, hand over the old house with a report and photos and open utilities.

Sorting

What moves and what stays: a decision that saves a quarter of the effort

Every item that goes into a box costs you three times: packing it, moving it and arranging it. If it does not deserve that, it belongs outside the move. Ask of every piece: have I used it in the last year? Does it fit the new house? Does moving it cost more than buying a replacement? For old furniture the new house cannot hold, selling or donating is better than storing it.

Lightening does not mean giving up memories. Set aside a carton or two for items of sentimental value and wrap them carefully, and let the rest go. After sorting, the load estimate is more accurate and the quote is closer to reality.

Timing

When should the family move? School, heat and weekends

The date is shaped by the school calendar, work and the hot season. Many families move during school holidays to reduce the effect on children, but those are also the busiest weeks for movers, so book early. In an Eastern Province summer heat and humidity are strong, so heavy work is best started early with cold water and rest breaks for the crew and the family.

Also consider the day of the week: some families prefer weekends because everyone is home, others prefer midweek because lifts and parking are quieter. Whichever you choose, book early and leave the day after the move free of commitments.

Utilities

Electricity, water and internet: open what you need before you arrive

Few things annoy a family more than arriving at a new house with no power, water or internet on the first night. Contact the service providers at least a week before the move to transfer meters, open accounts or update your address, and ask what documents and how much time are needed. At the old house, notify them to stop or transfer the service after handover so you are not billed for something that is no longer yours.

Allow generously for the time to install internet; it may take days, so if work or your childrens studies depend on it, arrange a temporary solution. If the new house has air conditioners that need fitting or cleaning, arrange it before the furniture arrives.

Family roles

Who does what on moving day?

Sharing roles stops everyone standing in the same place.

Supervisor at the old house

Stays until the last item, checks rooms, drawers and store, and signs off the handover.

Supervisor at the new house

Receives cartons and directs each number to its room, with doors and routes opened.

Whoever looks after the children

Keeps them away from carrying routes in a safe place with toys and meals.

Whoever carries papers and valuables

Holds jewellery, official papers and medicine in a hand bag that never enters the truck.

Whoever handles hospitality

Prepares water and drinks and a rest spot for the crew, especially in hot weather.

Whoever takes photos and records

Photographs rooms before and after and checks the list with the crew.

Older houses

Traditional houses and houses with a yard: what changes?

In the older districts of Eastern Province cities streets can be narrow and irregular, house entrances smaller than usual and an inner yard needs protection. Wooden doors and low ceilings are common, which means a large piece may not pass even if it looks small. Tell us the door width, the street length and whether the truck can enter, because that decides if loading is from the door or from a distance.

If the house has an upper store room or roof with stored items, count them in the load. It is best that we see the house, even by photos, before pricing; older houses hide the most details that a description does not show.

Handover

Handing back the old house: report, photos and keys

The move does not end when the last box leaves. The old house must be returned to its owner or agent in good condition, and that is the biggest source of disputes when it is not documented. Photograph each room after emptying, note the meter readings, hand over the keys with a written note and keep a copy. If there is a rental contract, check the handover terms and the notice period required.

Clean the house or agree who does it; cleaning after the move is easier than before because the rooms are empty. Do not forget built-in drawers, upper cupboards, the store room and the roof.

First night

The first-night room: what must be ready?

After a tiring day the family does not want to search for bedding, towels and phone chargers. So we set up one or two rooms as the priority in the new house: beds assembled, mattresses made up, curtains hung and the air conditioner working. The other cartons wait where they are and need not all be opened the same day.

Keep a first-day bag within reach: a day or two of clothes, medicine, toiletries, chargers, the childrens favourite toys and a few basic kitchen items. It is what you should carry yourself and not put in the truck.

What goes into the first-week bag?

Things you need before you open the first carton.

CategoryExamplesWhy
PapersIDs, contracts and school documentsNeeded to open services and register children
Medicine and hygieneFamily medicine and toiletriesThey cannot wait for cartons
Basic kitchenA few cups, plates and a kettleA first meal without chaos
ElectronicsChargers and a mobile hotspotFor contact and work
ChildrenFavourite toys and school booksEases their worry about the new house

Keep this bag separate and easy to recognise, and put it in your own car, not in the moving truck.

Papers

Important documents: never ship them with the furniture

Official papers such as IDs, passports, contracts, certificates, ownership documents, tenancy agreements and insurance files should not go into moving cartons. Carry them yourself in a closed bag, photograph them and keep an electronic copy. If some are in a safe or cupboard, take them out the day before the move so they do not get lost in the busyness.

The same goes for jewellery, cash and small valuable devices. They are not the moving crews responsibility and should not be packed with furniture. If you have a heavy safe, talk to us before the date so we can plan for it.

Cost

Beyond the moving fee: what else does a house move cost?

The moving fee is only part of relocation, and other items are often forgotten: cleaning the old house, utility fees or deposits, fitting air conditioners or new curtains, buying furniture that does not suit the old set, perhaps temporary storage and small repairs in the new house. Whoever lists these early is not surprised.

In the moving fee itself the drivers are furniture volume, number of floors, distance, wrapping required and dismantling and reassembly. We give no figures here, but we give a written quote itemising what it includes so you can compare quotes line by line.

The new area

Neighbours and the new district: the first week

In the first week get to know the area: the nearest grocery, pharmacy and school, the route to work, parking and bin collection times. If you are in a block or compound, ask about the rules for shared facilities. Introduce yourself to neighbours with a kind word; it brings help in the first month.

Do not rush to arrange every room at once; most families find the first layout changes after a few days of living in it. Leave some furniture unfixed until the picture settles.

Request

What should you send us for a suitable quote?

Send the city and district, the house type, the number of floors and rooms, whether there is a yard, annex or roof holding items, the heavy and fragile pieces, whether you want wrapping and dismantling included, the location of the new house and a preferred or flexible date. Photos of the main rooms and the entrance help a lot.

Then contact us on WhatsApp or by phone and we will plan the move with you and give you a written quote that spells out what it includes.
