Sofa Moving in the Eastern Province: Getting Corner Sofas and Majlis Seating There in One Piece

A sofa is one of the biggest pieces of furniture by volume and one of the lightest for its size, and that mix is what makes it hard: a bulky piece that will not pass the door, fabrics and leather that suffer from rubbing and humidity, and wooden frames that are harmed by bending. This page explains how sofas of all kinds are moved in the Eastern Province, including corner, majlis, single, leather and fabric. It covers how to measure entrances, how to protect the piece from dust and scratches, and what needs to be dismantled.

Why a light sofa is hard to move

An upholstered piece has a wooden frame, foam and fabric or leather. For its size it is not heavy, but its shape is awkward: a tall back, cushions, arms and protruding legs. That makes it hard to grip and turn in corridors.

The real challenge is passing through. A narrow door, a winding staircase, a small lift or a corner in a hallway can stop it. A sofa that went in easily may refuse to come out because something was added to the route. The answer is usually advance measuring and a plan for the route, followed by coordinated carrying by two or more people who talk and move together.

Measure the sofa and the entrances before moving

Measure the sofa’s length, width, height and depth, then measure the front door, room doors, corridor widths, stair turns and lift dimensions. A piece only passes if its smallest turning dimension is less than the narrowest point on the route, even by a few centimetres.

Remember that some sofas are carried tilted, on their side or after removing legs or backs, so the effective size changes. A balcony or window may be an alternative for large pieces, and that is studied in advance. Send us the measurements and photos of entrances and we decide the method before moving day.

Sofa types and how each is moved

Single, two- and three-seat sofas that stand alone are usually carried whole if they pass. Corner sofas are normally in modules separated from each other and moved apart, then reconnected in the new place.

Arabic majlis seating consists of floor cushions and long back rests, and some is ready-made while some is made to measure, and it moves mostly in parts. Sofa beds need care with their internal mechanism. The type and condition of the piece decide how it is carried, wrapped and routed, which is why we ask about type before arranging anything.

Process

Steps for moving a sofa

These steps recur, with details that depend on the type of sofa.

1

Measure and photograph

The piece and entrances are measured, the sofa and its condition photographed, and the carrying method decided.

2

Prepare the piece

Cushions come off and removable legs and backs are unscrewed, with screws kept together.

3

Protective wrapping

The sofa gets a clean cover with guards for corners, legs and rubbing points.

4

Coordinated carrying

The crew lifts together on clear signals, without dragging or bending the frame.

5

Load and transport

The sofa sits in a safe position away from sharp edges and is strapped firmly.

6

Unload and refit

It is brought down, legs and connectors are refitted and its condition is reviewed.

Removing legs, backs and connectors

Many sofas have legs that unscrew with a simple key, which lowers the height and stops them breaking when carried. Some backs come off with screws or clips, and corner sofas often join with metal hooks.

These parts come off carefully, with legs and screws bagged and labelled and attached to the piece, and connections photographed first. If removing something needs special tools, we say so in advance. If a piece is not designed to come apart, the crew is not forced to dismantle it for no reason, since that can harm the frame. We judge each case by type.

Protecting leather

Natural and artificial leather is affected by scratches, heat and humidity. It is covered with a clean cloth cover or a breathable film, and a tight plastic wrap that traps moisture is avoided, especially in hot summer.

It is guarded against sharp parts and floors, and the piece is never dragged along the ground. Areas that flex, such as arms and backs, are covered. On arrival the leather is left uncovered for a short while to air, then cleaned following the maker’s advice.

Protecting fabric and fine upholstery

Fabric holds dust and smells and snags on rough edges. The piece is covered with a clean cover and kept away from protruding screws, rough surfaces and dirty truck floors.

For fine fabrics such as velvet or silk, pressure and folding are avoided and the piece is carried by its frame rather than the cloth. Any stains or damage are recorded with clear photos before moving. A sofa should not be left on a damp floor or outside the truck during loading, since fabric picks up moisture and dust quickly.

Corner sofas: modules and connectors

A corner sofa is made of modules joined by metal clips or bolts, and separating them makes moving much easier. The order of modules is noted before separation and parts are numbered if they look alike.

The corner module itself is usually the largest and heaviest, and needs the most hands and the widest route. It travels apart from the side modules and its corner edges get extra cover. On rebuilding, modules stand on level ground and connectors are tightened so the row stays together.

Majlis seating and floor cushions

A majlis includes back rests, mattresses and floor cushions, and may have lighting or side shelves. Mattresses and cushions travel in clean covers, long back rests are carried by two people, and the arrangement is photographed before taking it apart so it can be laid out again.

Majlis seating made to the room’s measurements may need adjusting in the new home, so measure the new room before moving. Small parts such as side rests and loose covers are kept together. Majlis fabrics suffer from dust, so cover them well in transit and leave them in a clean room on arrival.

Upper floors, lifts and passing a sofa through

In high flats a large sofa may be bigger than the lift, so it goes up the stairs and is turned at each corner with care. In some cases it can be lifted from a balcony by crane where conditions are suitable, and that option is studied before the day.

A winding staircase needs coordinated movement and cannot be improvised, and it is best to clear the staircase of passers-by during carrying. Walls and doors are covered with protection where the piece touches them. Tell us the floor and the size of the stairs and lift so that we can choose what suits.

Protecting floors and walls as the sofa passes

A big sofa rubs walls when turning, and its legs scratch marble and wood floors. Protectors go on the legs, floors are covered in corridors, and corners of walls and doors are guarded with thick covers.

The piece is lifted, not dragged, even if dragging looks faster, because it leaves marks on the floor and weakens the sofa’s frame from below. Before entry, make sure the route is clean and clear of obstacles and the doors are open and held.

Common cases

How the plan changes by type of home

Where the sofa is and how it is reached change the plan.

Flat in a tower

The lift and management rules matter most, and sofa parts may need to come off.

Villa with a large majlis

More pieces and bigger sizes, with the route from majlis to truck planned.

Older house with narrow doors

Careful measuring, alternative routes and possibly more parts removed.

Compound

Gate passes, entry hours and sometimes distant parking that adds distance.

Old or weak sofas

An older sofa may have a weak wooden frame or worn joints, so it tolerates carrying less well. Tell us the age and condition of the piece and we carry it in a way that reduces stress on weak parts.

If a sofa needs repair or re-upholstering, it may be better done after the move rather than before. Some sofas may not be worth moving if the cost is close to that of a new one. We give our view after seeing photos without promising what cannot be delivered.

Cleaning before and after the move

It is best to clean the sofa before moving in a way that suits its material, and let it dry fully before wrapping, because wrapping damp fabric causes mould and smells. If cleaning needs a specialist, arrange it well before the moving date.

On arrival, covers come off and the piece is left to air, then any dust is cleaned. Cushions go back and legs are refitted. Do not put the sofa in a damp place, under a dripping air conditioner or beside an open window facing dust in its first days.

What affects the cost

We give no fixed figures. Cost depends on the number, size and type of sofas, floor and lift, need for dismantling, wrapping, crew and time, distance, and any crane lifting.

To compare quotes, ask each to state what it covers of dismantling, wrapping, unloading and refitting. For more detail, see our page on comparing moving quotes.

Common mistakes when moving sofas

They include not measuring entrances in advance, dragging the piece on the floor, wrapping leather in tight plastic for long, carrying the sofa by an arm or back so the frame is harmed, and leaving legs on without removal or protection.

Others are moving a damp sofa after cleaning, not numbering corner modules, and loading the sofa under heavy items that press on it. All are avoided with measuring, planning and loading in the right order.

What changes between cities and districts

Newer towers have rules and hours for lifts, older houses may have narrow doors and compounds require permits. These differences affect how a sofa is passed through and how many hands are needed.

On long trips between cities the sofa needs firmer strapping and more wrapping inside the truck. We ask about both places and the size of entrances and confirm what can be done once we know the details.

What this page does not claim

We do not promise that every sofa will pass every door, because some pieces exceed the size of entrances and need alternatives or replacement. We quote no prices we cannot confirm and we do not promise to remove stains or defects that exist.

We confirm details after we know your measurements and photos, and we warn you in advance about any expected difficulty in passing.
