Furniture Moving in Dhahran: How Each Type of Furniture Is Protected
Furniture is not one heavy mass. A big wooden wardrobe fears scraping, an upholstered sofa fears dust and damp, a marble table fears a knock on its corners, a television fears pressure on its face and a mirror fears vibration. Good furniture moving in Dhahran therefore starts by knowing each piece: its material, its weight, whether it comes apart and where it will sit in the truck. This page walks through the main categories so you know what to expect and what to prepare.

Why we start from the piece, not the room count
The number of rooms tells you the size of a load but not its risks. Two rooms with a heavy Italian wardrobe, a marble table and a big mirror are harder than four rooms of simple furniture. In Dhahran we begin with a list of the hardest items: how heavy, what material, can it be dismantled, will it clear the doorway and stairs. The answers decide the crew size, the wrapping and the loading order.
If you send clear photos of these pieces before the date, you save half the questions and the estimate becomes much more precise.
Solid and engineered wood
Large wooden items such as wardrobes, bed frames and desks suffer more from scraping than from impact. Surfaces are covered with clean moving blankets and held with straps that do not rub the finish, and corners get guards. Drawers are emptied of heavy contents and fixed so they cannot slide open on the road.
Thin engineered boards, including flat-pack furniture, fear damp and bending. They travel flat where possible, away from any drips, and their screws are bagged and labelled.
Sofas, majlis sets and soft furnishings
Fabric and leather dislike dust, rubbing and moisture. A sofa gets a clean breathable layer and then an outer dust layer, and it is never left squeezed for days. Cushions travel separately and upholstered pieces are lifted, not dragged. For large majlis sets, the pieces are loaded in the reverse order they will be needed at the new home.
If your sofa has gilded or painted wooden feet, say so; ornate edges need extra padding compared with plain legs.
Marble and glass tops
Marble is heavy and brittle at once, and the main danger is a knock on a corner or being lifted from one end. Tops are carried upright by at least two people, covered in protective layers and stood on their edge in the truck between soft pieces and strapped. Glass gets bubble layers and edge guards, and nothing presses on it.
Bases are separated from tops where possible to lower the weight, and big slabs are loaded last and unloaded first so nothing stacks on them.
Piece, risk and protection
A quick reference for common materials in Dhahran homes.
| Piece | Main risks | What it needs | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large wooden wardrobe | Scrapes, sliding drawers | Blankets, ties, empty drawers | Dismantle if possible |
| Sofa | Dust, damp, stains | Breathable wrap | Lift, never drag |
| Marble table | Cracked corners, weight | Upright, edge guards | Two people or more |
| TV or monitor | Pressure on the screen | Rigid box, bubble wrap | Carry upright |
| Mirror or artwork | Vibration, breakage | Boards, bubble wrap | Travel standing |
| Fridge or washer | Tilting, leaks | Secure parts, keep upright | Rest before use |
The table is general; your own pieces may bring extra requirements.
Screens and electronics
Modern screens are thin and fragile, and pressure on the face can crack them. They travel upright, wrapped in bubble layers and placed in a rigid box if you still have the original. Cables are labelled or photographed so everything goes back as it was. Desktop computers are shielded from dust and shocks, and if there is important data, the drive is best carried with you.
Nothing heavy goes on top of wrapped screens, and they should not wait in the sun.
Kitchens and appliances
A kitchen combines appliances, crockery and cabinets. Cabinets are emptied, fragile items are wrapped in paper and bubble layers, and appliances are disconnected from power and water by a qualified person when needed. Fridges and washing machines need their moving parts secured and must stay upright, then rest after arrival before being switched on. Fitted kitchens have their own steps, covered on our furniture assembly page.
Do not mix sharp tools or loose cleaning products among the crockery, as they pierce cartons and damage neighbouring items.
Bedrooms, beds and wardrobes
Beds with upholstered headboards, sliding wardrobes and built-in lighting are dismantled carefully and every part is numbered. Sliding doors are taped to stop them swinging free. Mattresses go in clean covers, flat or slightly inclined, never folded, and they are loaded last so they stay clean. See our page on bedroom moving for more.
Each bed's screws go in a small bag stuck to its parts, so you are not searching for one bolt at midnight.
Home offices and desks
Many Dhahran homes have a work corner. Drawers are emptied and files go into boxes, loose drawers are removed, and glass tops are padded. Office chairs have moving parts secured. A desk made from large panels is better rebuilt by a carpenter so it keeps its stability.
Small valuable devices are best kept with you rather than loaded on the truck.
Rugs, curtains and light furnishings
Rugs are rolled, not folded, and kept clear of dust; big ones need two people. Curtains come down with their hooks kept together and light textiles go into breathable bags. Avoid stacking these under heavy pieces where they get creased and dirty.
Make sure rugs and soft items are completely dry before wrapping, because trapped moisture leaves a smell that is hard to remove.
Classic pieces and ornaments
Decorated classic furniture, glass and ceramic ornaments need fewer hands and more patience. Carved parts get a soft first layer, small items are wrapped one by one and listed, and fragile boxes sit away from heavy loads. Photograph them before wrapping to record their condition.
Do not over-compress layers around gilded finishes; pressure and rubbing can mark the paint.
Chandeliers, lighting and large mirrors
Chandeliers are taken apart, crystal or glass pieces are wrapped individually and placed in padded divided boxes, and the fitting is never lifted by its cable. Lighting built into furniture needs the power isolated by someone competent before dismantling. Large mirrors are marked as glass, wrapped in bubble layers and stiff cardboard and moved upright between soft pieces, never flat under weight.
These items are listed first during the inventory because they are the easiest to overlook.
How the truck is loaded
Heavy, stable pieces go low and near the front of the body, medium items next, and light or fragile ones above or in a protected space, everything strapped so nothing shifts. Large marble and mirror surfaces stand upright between soft layers. Items that will come off last are loaded first, and the farthest room at the new home is loaded last so it unloads first.
Good loading can protect furniture more than extra wrapping.
Floors, lifts and narrow entrances
Measure doors, corridors and the lift before the date and compare them with your largest items. If something will not fit, decide in advance whether to dismantle it, lift it by another route or turn it at an angle. If the building has no lift and you are on a high floor, tell us, because it changes crew size and time. Our page on high-floor moving covers the details.
Protective covers on lift walls, doors and floors reduce scratches and keep good relations with the building management.
Overloaded drawers and boxes
A common cause of breakage is a full drawer or a box of books that is simply too heavy. Empty what you can, and pack books in small boxes because a large box of books is beyond what two people can carry safely. As a rule of thumb, if you cannot lift it comfortably on your own, it should not sit in a weak carton.
Label heavy boxes so the crew knows how to carry them.
Moving only a few pieces
You might be moving newly bought furniture, items from storage or a bed for a family member in another flat. In that case you should not pay for a full crew and truck. Tell us what you need, where and which floor, and whether there is a lift, so the estimate is sized for the job.
Even one piece gets the same wrapping and strapping, because protection does not depend on how many items there are.
Unwrap, check and arrange
Leave protective covers on until each piece is where it will stay, then remove them carefully. Check corners, surfaces, doors and drawers and compare with your list. Rebuild beds and wardrobes first, then arrange the other rooms, and let big appliances stand before switching on. Photograph any issue and send it straight away.
It is sensible to keep the packaging for a day or two until you are sure everything is fine.
Typical mistakes
Typical mistakes include leaving drawers full, sealing wooden furniture in plastic for days, carrying marble flat, stacking appliances on soft furniture without strapping, not measuring entrances and not protecting floors at the new home. Another is failing to agree an unloading order, so pieces pile up in the hallway.
Most of these are avoided with a few measurements before the date and a person in charge at each address.
